Born in San Francisco in 1968, comedian and actress Margaret Cho made her way through an extremely tumultuous childhood, to explode onto the scene in the early 90s with her unique brand of edgy humor. Margaret parlayed her success in standup into a role on the Bea Arthur-less Golden Girls spinoff, The Golden Palace, before landing her own network sitcom, All-American Girl! soon after. Unlike most standups given their own sitcoms, Margaret didn’t have much creative control over the show, which was accused of perpetuating Asian stereotypes and casting non-Koreans in Korean roles. Worse, some knucklehead at ABC thought Margaret was too chubby for primetime television, so she starved herself into hospitalization to please them. The show failed, but Margaret was able to carve out quite a career for herself, even appearing in some huge blockbuster movies like Face/Off (1997), The Rugrats Movie (1998), and One Missed Call (2008), while remaining true to herself onstage. She also wasn’t too jaded by her American Girl experience to return to sitcoms, starring as Teri Lee on the body positive dramedy Drop Dead Diva. Less positive was the reaction to her turn as murderous North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il on 30 Rock, a role she played again at the Golden Globes, but which drew criticism online. Nobody is going to criticize her work on the HBO stoner comedy High Maintenance, though. Working on some S and M, Margaret whips a topless Hye Yun Park after tying her up, before watching her satisfy another woman. Despite these flirtations with the erotic, we wouldn’t see Margaret’s magnificent mams until the Dorian Wood music video La Cara Infinita in 2013.
