A chart-topping pop singer whose smash hit “Gloria” remains a remixed standard in the dance clubs of today, lovely Laura Branigan did a bit of dabbling in the acting game, bringing a smile to spots in the TV shows CHiPs, Automan, and Monsters and the movie Delta Pi (1984) alongside Oscar winner Ruth Gordon. She also lent her songs to more popular fare like Ghostbusters (1984) and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (2002). The most skinsational moment in her acting career was undoubtedly when she portrayed an American pop singer yearning to become an actress in the Aussie chick flick Backstage (1988). The film contains a love scene where Laura disposes of her top and reveals her musical mams in all their “Gloria!” Sadly, a fatal brain aneurysm took this chart-topper from us in August 2004. Although we had the blues when Laura died, it’s the Blues that revived her career. The NHL’s St. Louis Blues played “Gloria” as a good luck charm during their miraculous 2018-2019 season in which they became the first North American professional sports team to win a championship after sitting in last place after the quarter point of the season. The week of their Stanley Cup victory “Gloria” reached the Billboard charts for the first time in over 35 years, and it was played for 500,000 people at the team’s championship parade. Laura has become more famous in the sports world than anyone could have imagined. Of course, Mr. Skin would rather she be famous for nudity, but he’s happy all the same.
