Born in Argentina, Mía Maestro went to Berlin to become a cabaret singer before making her splashy big-screen debut as Elena Flores in the Oscar-nominated foreign film, Tango (1998). Next, she waltzed into American arthouses in Timecode (2000), the experimental film that consists of four separate stories being shown on the screen at once, which was the first of what would be several roles opposite Salma Hayek. Mía played a sexy refugee in HBO‘s For Love or Country: The Arturo Sandoval Story (2000) and provided some local, background beauty in the Mexico-set Picking Up the Pieces (2000). But Mía really got American audiences mewling when she joined Hayek again in Frida (2002).
