It’s nice to be a director. Ask Hal Hartley, who directed Japanese actress Miho Nikaido in Flirt (1995) and then asked the beautiful Asian to live with him. He even married her. He also filmed her wrapped in plastic for the Flirt, with one of her bare breasts escaping the costume to make a splash on the big screen all by itself. Not the first time Miho appeared naked on screen, that honor would go to the NC-17-rated movie Tokyo Decadence, original title Topâzu (1992). Shot in New York City in both Japanese and English, Miho plays submissive hooker Ai, and we see her in any number of compromising positions, often naked, and often cuffed or tied. The brunette stunner took another nude turn as Miko in Going Under (2004), making out with another woman in the US movie project. Going back to that Harley connection, the director continued to work with his muse after Flirt wrapped, and led her as Gnoc Deng in Henry Fool (1997) and its sequel Fay Grim (2006) with Parker Posey, Edie in The Book of Life(1998), playing a beautician in No Such Thing (2001) with Sarah Polley, and in Meanwhile (2011). The duo also did a documentary video together, called Adventure (2010), where they headed to Japan to see Miho’s parents, and to chat about their long-term marriage and their careers. It’s nice to be a director but it’s also nice to watch what directors do, enjoying the view without any of the responsibilities. Just hit play!
