Sometimes clichés are used over and over again for a reason: because they’re awesome. People will always love to see the underdogs beat the better team, or the nerd beat up the bully. So, we’re not ashamed to admit that while it’s a cliche, we can’t get enough of a pigtail wearing, adorable but legally boreable Japanese schoolgirl. And while many have played the role, but few done it as well as Mayu Ozawa. Born in Kumamota, Mayu took home a “Best Actress” win at the Paris Film Festival for her work in her screen debut Shoujyo (2001) or “An Adolescent.” It tells the story of a tough guy turned bored cop, who keeps himself occupied making it with housewives and taking care of a disabled teen. Then he meets Yoko, the boy’s sister played by Mayu: a prostitute who is raising money to help him. You may spew watching Mayu, mainly because she’s constantly taking her top off while bathing, changing clothes, railing dudes and getting tattooed. Mayu’s starmaking performance didn’t really launch her career, though she couldn’t be considered a bust either. She makes about a movie a year, from Runin: Banished (2004) and Sayounara (2018) to her most recent flick, the moving out party flick Wonderful Paradise (2020). For us, paradise is watching Mayu take her clothes off and do a good deed, like doing the dirty deed to help out her less fortunate brother. She couldn’t play young forever, but when she was acting innocent Mayu Ozawa was an absolute wowzer!
